Today, Roll Call released their list of the ten most vulnerable incumbent House members and Congressman Mike Garcia shot up the list to the number one most vulnerable incumbent in Congress. Roll Call notes that while Garcia may have won a May Special Election, the fall November electorate in this district in the Los Angeles suburbs “is expected to look much less Republican.”
- Mike Garcia, R-CA.
“Garcia won a May 12 special election to replace former Democratic Rep. Katie Hill by 10 points, but the fall electorate in this district outside Los Angeles is expected to look much less Republican. Garcia once again faces state Assemblywoman Christy Smith. And even though he had $738,000 on hand as of June 30, to $403,000 for Smith, a surge in turnout in November compared to the special election could be a problem for him in a seat Trump lost in 2016. Garcia is also the only Republican incumbent running in a district where Hillary Clinton won more than 50 percent of the vote.”
REMINDER – In 2016, Trump lost CA-25 by 7 points. Democrats won it by 9 points in 2018. Garcia is the only Republican to represent a seat Clinton won by more than 50 percent of the vote.
“It’s no surprise that Congressman Garcia ranks at the top of the list for the ‘most vulnerable’ incumbents,” said DCCC Spokesperson Andy Orellana. “Between Mike Garcia’s unquestioning loyalty to Trump’s agenda of terminating health care for working California families, to Garcia standing on the White House Lawn and thanking the President for his ‘leadership’” during this crisis, and now his vote to ignore our small businesses and putting special interests first, Garcia’s Washington record makes him more vulnerable by the day.”
Cook Political Report and Politico all rate CA-25 as “Toss Up”, while Inside Elections rate it as a “Tilt Democrat”. This district is part of the DCCC’s Red to Blue program.
