In each harrowing congressional hearing, the House’s Jan. 6 committee meticulously reveals a well-developed plan upheld by elected representatives and government officials to overturn the 2020 presidential election and void Americans’ votes.
One hundred and forty seven congressmembers abandoned their duty to the American people and threw their support behind a coup against our government. Among those radical members are two of California’s most vulnerable sitting congressmen: Mike Garcia and Ken Calvert.
Today, an editorial from the LA Times blasts Garcia and Calvert for their culpability in the January 6th insurrection and the continued threat they present to American democracy.
Ken Calvert, who stated he hoped charges would be dropped against insurrectionists, is facing his first competitive election in nearly a decade, while Mike Garcia, who called Capitol police the “gestapo,” is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the country. This November, Californians can hold these radical Republicans accountable, or else risk further assaults on our democracy.
“Mike Garcia and Ken Calvert are complicit in the deadly attack on our Capitol and the continued assault on our democratic rights,” said DCCC spokesperson Maddy Mundy. “Our democracy will not be safe until these dangerous extremists are voted out of office.”

The Los Angeles Times: Editorial: These California congressmen betrayed voters on Jan. 6

As the nation absorbs the revelations from the congressional hearings on the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol — among them, that then-President Trump was surrounded by aides telling him there was no evidence of voter fraud and that his scheme to have Vice President Mike Pence overturn the election results was illegal — voters must remember that 147 members of Congress were complicit in the attempted coup.
-
Voters must hold them to account for this betrayal.
-
The one-quarter of the members of Congress who voted against certifying the electoral votes from Pennsylvania and/or Arizona made a conscious decision to amplify Trump’s “Big Lie.” It is especially shameful that these members perpetuated Trump’s false narrative even while it propelled violent mobs to storm the Capitol.
-
Among the 11 Republicans in California’s delegation, seven voted against certifying it. Six of them are seeking reelection this year (the seventh, Rep. Devin Nunes, resigned late last year):
-
Rep. Ken Calvert of Corona: The longest-serving California Republican in Congress, Calvert was elected in 1992 and represents a district based in Riverside County. He won 48% of the vote in this month’s primary and faces a credible reelection challenge in November. Democrat Will Rollins, a former federal prosecutor, is getting support from former Sen. Barbara Boxer in an effort to flip the seat.
-
Rep. Mike Garcia of Santa Clarita: Elected in 2020 after Democratic Rep. Katie Hill resigned, Garcia has proved, in his short time in office, to be a Trump enabler and a threat to democracy. The race to represent this swing district that includes Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley will be one of the most competitive in the country as Garcia faces off against Democrat Christy Smith, a levelheaded centrist whom The Times has endorsed.
-
These congressmen put loyalty to Trump and his lies above allegiance to the American people and respect for the nation’s rule of law. If voters don’t hold them accountable for their shameful vote on Jan. 6, 2021, there’s a risk they could facilitate more brazen attacks on democracy in the future.
