Hinson on calling donors: “I look at that as the best opportunity to connect with people and hear what’s on their mind… that’s the best way to have a conversation with people who are connected, to get their perspective on what’s important right now.”
Ashley Hinson is trying an unorthodox strategy in her bid for Congress, unabashedly basing her campaign on the concerns of wealthy Republican donors instead of everyday working Iowans.
This weekend, Hinson told This Week in Iowa host Sabrina Ahmed that she views fundraising calls “as the best opportunity to connect with people and hear what’s on their mind… the best way to have a conversation with people who are connected, to get their perspective on what’s important right now.”
In the past, Hinson has spent her campaigns “getting perspective” from donors like the Koch brothers and big pharmaceutical and insurance companies. No wonder she’s used her political career to fight against the little guy.
“Ashley Hinson has spent her time in the Statehouse fighting for well-connected special interests – and she just admitted exactly why,” said DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren. “Hinson should stop listening to her powerful backers and start listening to Iowa working families. The last thing Iowans need is someone like Hinson serving as a mouthpiece for the Washington Republicans and ultra-wealthy donors who line her pockets.”
From ABC5’s This Week in Iowa:
HOST: Talk to me about fundraising, because obviously there will have to be a lot of money that’s put into this race in order for you to be successful. How is that going, and do you feel, how do you feel in a place that is currently a blue district?
ASHLEY HINSON: Yeah, it’s, I would call it a swing district — but I think that, you know, fundraising for me is going well. I look at that as the best opportunity to connect with people and hear what’s on their mind. As I’m calling people, and like I said, I spent the last two weeks going around the district, meeting with people, trying to make sure I have that support that I need here in Iowa. And I believe I have that, and I think my report this quarter, once we get to the end of the quarter, will show that. But you know, ultimately, that’s the best way to have a conversation with people who are connected, to get their perspective on what’s important right now.
