Nick Begich: “I Would Rate The Federal Government’s Interactions With Alaska Native Tribes As Very Poor,” Including Native Veterans
Begich: “I Would Rate The Federal Government’s Interactions With Alaska Native Tribes As Very Poor,” Including Native Veterans. “Additionally, Alaska Native Vietnam Veterans have not received the land selections promised to them, and tragically, many of these veterans have passed away before receiving their rightful land. Moreover, the Interior Department Secretary has failed to engage with North Slope community leaders before enacting regulations and making resource development decisions that dramatically impact their future opportunities. This lack of consultation and fulfillment of promises represents a significant failure in the federal government’s duty to Alaska Native tribes. To address these issues, we must adopt a course of action that is consistent with a conservative and small government approach while recognizing our intergovernmental responsibilities. A special initiative should be launched to ensure that Alaska Native Vietnam Veterans or their families receive their promised land selections without further delay.” [Alaska Beacon, 9/12/24]
