North Carolina Right To Life Held The Position That “The Life Of Every Human Being Begins At The Moment Of Fertilization.” “Our lives all began, of course, long before our births. 2023: A North Carolina Right To Life Spokesperson Said SB 20, A Bill That Banned Abortion After 12 Weeks With Narrow Exceptions That The Group Helped Craft, Did Not Go Far Enough To End Abortion

2023: A North Carolina Right To Life Spokesperson Said That Despite The “Victory” Of Banning Abortion After 12 Weeks, There Was Still “A Long Way To Go.” “CWR: With abortion back at the state level post-Dobbs, what does the pro-life political landscape of North Carolina look like today? Sonnen: Despite last May’s victory of the Care for Women, Children and Families Act in the NC General Assembly, we still have a very long way to go. Considering that over 90% of abortions occur prior to 12 weeks, the new legal limit allowing abortions in North Carolina with exceptions, there are too few babies being saved for us or any pro-life legislators to sit back. We must continue to educate both the public and those in office and remain steadfast in ensuring even more protections for the unborn.” [Catholic World Report, 9/25/23]

  • Catholic World Report: North Carolina Right To Life Helped Craft SB 20, Which Banned Abortion After 12 Weeks In North Carolina With Narrow Exceptions. “Natalie Sonnen: Over the years, one of NCRTL’s primary responsibility has been to ensure the passage of pro-life legislation on both the state and federal levels. To this end, NCRTL has lobbied at the North Carolina General Assembly to make legislators aware of our positions on various bills and to provide accurate information as to why we support or oppose a bill. […] We also helped to put in place the Parental Consent for Abortion legislation, and just recently, we had our President, Dr. Bill Pincus at the legislature daily, helping our lawmakers craft our most recent win, the Care for Women, Children and Families Act. We also helped bolster politicians to stay steadfast in the wake of the Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of the recent Act and were successful in the override of his veto.” [Catholic World Report, 9/25/23]

  • National Right To Life Was One Of The Nation’s Oldest Anti-Abortion Groups, And Had A Federation Of State Right-To-Life Affiliates. “Founded in 1968, National Right to Life is the nation’s oldest and largest pro-life organization. National Right to Life is the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates, the District of Columbia and more than 3,000 local chapters.Through education and legislation, National Right to Life works to restore legal protection to the most defenseless members of our society who are threatened by abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and euthanasia.” [National Right to Life, “About NRLC,” accessed 11/12/25]
  • National Right To Life Said Its Legislative Efforts And Those Of Its State Affiliates Were “One Of The Keys To Ending Abortion In The United States.” “Now, on this 48th anniversary of the Court’s action, we pause to look at the state of abortion in the United States. From recent data analyzed in these pages, we know the annual number of abortions is in an overall decline. This drop in numbers can be traced to a number of factors, but among them are the efforts by National Right to Life and its network of state affiliates to enact protective laws that provide legal protection to unborn children and offer hope and help to their mothers. These legislative efforts are at the very heart of our work, and they are one of the keys to ending abortion in the United States.” [National Right To Life, January 2021]
  • National Right To Life Promoted Model Legislation That Banned Abortion Without Exceptions For Rape Or Incest. “The 10-year-old Ohio girl who crossed state lines to receive an abortion in Indiana should have carried her pregnancy to term and would be required to do so under a model law written for state legislatures considering more restrictive abortion measures, according to the general counsel for the National Right to Life. Jim Bopp, an Indiana lawyer who authored the model legislation in advance of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, told POLITICO on Thursday that his law only provides exceptions when the pregnant person’s life is in danger. […] ‘Unless her life was at danger, there is no exception for rape,’ Bopp said. ‘The bill does propose exceptions for rape and incest, in my model, because that is a pro-life position, but it’s not our ideal position. We don’t think, as heartwrenching as those circumstances are, we don’t think we should devalue the life of the baby because of the sins of the father.’” [Politico, 7/14/22]

2022: NRLC Leadership: 10-Year-Old Rape Survivor Should Have Been Required To Give Birth

2022: NRLC Leadership: 10-Year-Old Rape Survivor Should Have Been Required To Give Birth. “Jim Bopp, an Indiana lawyer who authored the model legislation in advance of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, told POLITICO on Thursday that his law only provides exceptions when the pregnant person’s life is in danger. ‘She would have had the baby, and as many women who have had babies as a result of rape, we would hope that she would understand the reason and ultimately the benefit of having the child,’ Bopp said in a phone interview on Thursday. The story of the 10-year old rape victim forced to leave her home state to terminate a pregnancy has sparked a national conversation over the consequences of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and how far some states are willing to go to prohibit abortions.” [Politico, 7/14/22]

Jennifer Balkcom for re-election to House District 117: ‘We are endorsing Rep. Jennifer Balkcom for re-election to the NC House because of her steadfast commitment to advancing family values in our state,’ said Executive Director Tami Fitzgerald. ‘This year Rep. Balkcom was a leader in the successful effort to pass legislation that protects girls in sleeping quarters on public school field trips, prevents sexual exploitation of women and children, and ensures that parents cannot lose custody of their children simply for raising them according to their biological sex. She also fought for parents to have the right to consent for all medical decisions for their children and to stop illegal mail-order abortions. We’ve worked with Rep. Balkcom for three impactful years, and she is a powerful voice for women, children, and families in the NC House.’” [Facebook, NC Values, 11/12/25]

N.C. Values Coalition Was An Extreme Anti-Abortion Group That Advocated For A “Heartbeat Act,” An Even Harsher Anti-Abortion Law Than North Carolina’s 12-Week Ban

N.C. Values Coalition Was An Extreme Anti-Abortion Group That Advocated For An Even Harsher Anti-Abortion Law Than North Carolina’s 12-Week Ban. “Today marks the second anniversary of the monumental Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which reversed Roe v. Wade and left it up to elected representatives of the people to decide their own pro-life protections. We wanted to give you an overview of what has happened since then and what the future of life may look like. In response to Dobbs’ undoing of Roe, a number of states passed pro-life protections, including our own. While NC Values championed more conservative pro-life positions, North Carolina ultimately passed legislation that limited abortion to the 12th gestational week. Our goal is to join other southern states who already protect unborn babies throughout pregnancy; however, North Carolina saw over 3,346 precious unborn babies’ lives saved as a result of passing SB20, the ‘Care for Women, Children, and Families Act,’ last year. It was desperately needed, as North Carolina was becoming the abortion destination of the South (even at one point leading all states in its increase in abortions).” [NC Values Coalition, 6/24/24]

NPR: Most Women Do Not Know They Are Pregnant At Six Weeks, When Fetal Cardiac Activity Can Become Detectable. “The term ‘fetal heartbeat,’ as used in the anti-abortion law in Texas, is misleading and not based on science, say physicians who specialize in reproductive health. What the ultrasound machine detects in an embryo at six weeks of pregnancy is actually just electrical activity from cells that aren't yet a heart. […] In reality, it would be really hard for a woman to know she's pregnant before the point at which cardiac activity would be detectable by an ultrasound. She would have to be tracking her periods carefully, have regular periods, notice her period was late and then be able to quickly get an appointment with her doctor to confirm a pregnancy.” [NPR, 9/2/21]
