And you know, one of the people that used to come to our church and speak was Charlie Kirk. So, I got to meet Charlie Kirk. I didn’t know him. That would be disingenuous for me to say, but I did hear him. I met him, and I heard him speak several times in very intimate settings. Was both him speaking and taking questions and answers from church members, the audience. And really that was they were the first men to challenge me, excuse me, to stand and to fight and again during the pandemic, it was that moment of what’s happening?” [Alamo Sports and Talk, Conservative News Talk, 23:59-25:22, 1/16/26] (AUDIO)

Cunningham Credited Pastor Smotherman With Inspiring Him To Get Involved In Politics
VIDEO: March 2026: Cunningham Said His Pastor At Legacy Church And Charlie Kirk Challenged Him To “Get Up” And “Get Involved” In Politics. CUNNINGHAM: “I never had any aspirations politically. It I, you know, you hear a lot of people say, Well, I don’t get involved in politics. And that I was one of those people that said that. And at the time that I was saying that I felt like I was being intelligent, but really, I realize now that when people say that that’s actually ignorant, that’s laziness, that’s not understanding what’s going on around you and what actually drives your neighborhood and your city. So that was me taking that sort of moral high ground, and in 2020 during the pandemic, I attend Legacy Church, our pastor, the governor, tried to close churches down. And our governor, you know, again, said, you can’t worship, you can’t praise. I mean, she did everything she could to close everything down as you know we were. We were one of the most locked down states in the union. Again, you men are very much more familiar with that than I am, actually. And watching the battle between my pastor and the governor, being a former Marine, being a retired police officer, a business owner, that was sort of my eye-opening moment, like what’s happening. I had always thought of Americans as being unruly, but in a good way, and that’s not what I was witnessing. I was witness, you know, witnessing fear, drive people’s actions. And I just decided at that point, listening to my pastor and Charlie Kirk used to come to our church. I have to mention that when he came to New Mexico, Legacy Church is where he came. And I listened to him speak on several occasions in intimate settings. I met him there at the church, and between those two men challenging me to get up, get involved.” [Rio Grande Foundation via YouTube, Tipping Point New Mexico, 2:06-4:00, 3/17/26] (VIDEO)
