Patti Adair Repeatedly Refused To Answer If She Believed That Climate Change Was Real And Humans Were The Main Drivers, Saying “Weather Is Changing. It Changes All The Time”

Adair Repeatedly Retweeted Climate Change Denial

2019: Adair Retweeted A Quote From Thomas Sowell That Called Global Warming “Hysteria.” “Back in 1970, the prevailing hysteria was the threat of a new ice age—promoted by some of the same environmentalists who are promoting global warming hysteria today.” [Patti Jean Adair, Twitter, 11/24/19]

2019: Adair Reposted A Tweet Conflating Climate Change And Weather That Argued That Climate Change Was Not Occuring Because Oregon Had Weather Variation. “So for those who are fairly new to Oregon and think ‘climate change’ with our weather, as an old timer, here's an old Oregon saying: ‘don't like the weather? Wait 5 minutes it'll change!’ Hot, cold, dry, wet that's Oregon. Always has been. #CapAndTrade won't change that.” [Bill Post, Twitter, 9/8/19]

2022: Adair Refused To Answer If She Believed That Climate Change Was Real, Saying “Weather Is Changing. It Changes All The Time”

October 2022: Bend Bulletin: Adair Dodged A Debate Question Asking If Climate Change Was Real, Saying “Weather Is Changing. It Changes All The Time.” “DeBone said the county health plan does a good job in serving everyone, and abortions are still safe and legal in Oregon without including it in the coverage for county employees. Both Adair and DeBone dodged a question asking if climate change was real. ‘Weather is changing. It changes all the time,’ Adair said. ‘It's not a crisis. Let's not all panic right today,’ DeBone said.” [Bend Bulletin, 10/22/22]

2018: Adair Allegedly Gave A Jumbled, Non-Answer When Asked If She Believed That Climate Change Was Happening And Humans Were The Main Drivers

2018: A Candidate Forum Attendee Claimed Adair Gave A Non-Answer When Asked At A Candidate Forum If She Agreed That Climate Change Was Happening And That Humans Were The Main Drivers. “I attended the Deschutes County Commissioner Candidates Forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters on October 3. Present were Tony DeBone and Amy Lowes (Position #1) and Patti Adair and James Cook (Position #3). One of the questions put by the moderator concerned climate change. He asked each candidate in turn whether they were part of the 72 percent in Deschutes County who acknowledge that climate change is happening and understand that humans are the main drivers? Adair was the first to go, saying, ‘OK. The climate has always been changing, I do believe that. We’ve had amazing differences, Greenland was green at one time. I actually lived in Seattle when Mt. St. Helens went off. The weather in Seattle changed for several years. It was a lot nicer. All the CO2 was released by an enormous volcano.’ Wait. Did Adair actually suggest that the carbon dioxide released by the eruption warmed the weather in Seattle?” [Jack Elliott, Letter To The Editor, Bend Source, 10/10/18]

According To An Forum Attendee, Adair Said: “The Climate Has Always Been Changing, I Do Believe That. We’ve Had Amazing Differences, Greenland Was Green At One Time. I Actually Lived In Seattle When Mt. St. Helens Went Off. The Weather In Seattle Changed For Several Years. It Was A Lot Nicer. All The CO2 Was Released By An Enormous Volcano.” “One of the questions put by the moderator concerned climate change. Did Adair actually suggest that the carbon dioxide released by the eruption warmed the weather in Seattle? And for several years? The prevailing winds at the time blew the plume east and the dust cloud did reduce nighttime cooling resulting in general warming for a few days in eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming […] But in Seattle? For several years? Is the candidate under the impression that CO2 is not a gas that is carried by the wind? Does she think that it lingered in the area for years, creating some kind of greenhouse ‘bubble’ over Seattle? Adair has been described as ‘devisive’ and too extreme for Deschutes County. To that I’d add ‘nutty.’” [Jack Elliott, Letter To The Editor, Bend Source, 10/10/18]

Bend Source: Adair Allegedly “Claimed In A Debate That The 1980 Mount St. Helens’ Eruption Resulted In Years Of ‘Nicer’ Weather In Seattle” And That “‘Greenland Used To Be Green,’ Therefore, Presumably, The Melting Of The Greenland Ice Shelf Shouldn’t Be A Huge Deal.” “The commission shake-up means applicants who appear before the Board to obtain permit approval for everything from new marijuana farms to enhancements of existing processing facilities will likely face unreasonable interpretations of the already-unreasonable rules. Odor-control devices, for example, can’t ever seem to please the Board. Even when mechanical engineers testify that the skunk stank can’t reach the neighbors, an applicant can still count on at least one ‘no’ vote from Henderson, who seems to fancy himself an odor-control scientist. You can expect more pseudo-science from Adair, who claimed in a debate that the 1980 Mount St. Helens’ eruption resulted in years of ‘nicer’ weather in Seattle (nevermind the ash plume blew east, not west) and that ‘Greenland used to be green,’ therefore, presumably, the melting of the Greenland ice shelf shouldn’t be a huge deal. In 2016, Adair testified before the Board—at that time considering whether to opt back in to adult-use marijuana—that she ‘likes the smell of alfalfa, not pot.’ If only she were simple entertainment.” [The Bend Source, 11/14/18]
