Tariffs Could Soon Increase The Price Of Drugs For Virginians Who Manage Chronic Health Conditions. “For many Virginians managing chronic health conditions, staying on top of prescriptions is already a challenge. Now, a new round of federal tariffs could make that burden even heavier, financially. The latest trade policy from President Donald Trump includes increased tariffs on prescription drugs imported from foreign manufacturers. The president is hoping to move pharmaceutical production from overseas to the United States. That includes generic medications from countries like India and China, which supply the majority of the U.S. market.” [WTKR News 3, 10/2/25]
10/2/25: Virginia Pharmacies Were Bracing For Higher Wholesale Costs. “Bhutta says local pharmacies are bracing for higher wholesale costs, which could soon be passed along to patients — especially seniors and retirees who rely on fixed incomes and Medicare. Insurance premiums and copays could also rise. ‘It’s going to affect a lot of our retirement community. Medicare patients could see changes to what’s covered, or higher out-of-pocket costs,’ Bhutta said.” [WTKR News 3, 10/2/25]

At Least Some Of The Increased Cost From The Tariffs Will Be Passed Onto Ratepayers. “Stonepeak, an investment firm, has agreed to pay 25% of the project’s cost between $10.3 billion and $11.3 billion. Dominion Energy shareholders will also share 25% of those costs. Ratepayers will pay for 50% of the project cost between $10.3 billion and $11.3 billion as part of an agreement with the State Corporation Commission. Ratepayers can expect an average increase of three cents per month on their bills over the life of the project from the tariffs. Overall, customers are currently paying $8.63 a month on average for the project.” [Bay Journal, 8/26/25]

Virginia Toy Store Owners Face Increased Prices Due To Tariffs, Up To A 30% Increase. “President Donald Trump’s taxes on imported goods are driving up the cost of kids’ toys. Small businesses in Virginia say they are feeling the pinch. ‘We get hit with the tariffs,’ Barrie Shapiro, co-owner of The Toy Shoppe in Richmond, told the Virginia Independent. Founded in 1975, the store sells high-quality dolls and plush toys from vendors like Steiff in Giengen, Germany, and Merrythought in Ironbridge, England. ‘We bring in things from around the world, different dolls and bears. So we do get hit with tariffs. So far, unless I’m wrong, it’s about 10%.’ ‘About 82% of toys sold in the U.S. are either made in or have components from China,’ Thea Brown, owner of World of Mirth in Richmond, said in an email. ‘We have been dealing with price increases and extra tariffs of up to 30% added to our invoices for months now. This is directly due to this administration’s implementation and/or threats of tariffs on incoming goods.’” [Virginia Independent News, 7/14/25]
