Retirement Watch Ramps Up for North Carolina Republicans

New Congressional Map Puts Holding, Walker on Notice

The newly settled 2020 North Carolina congressional map spells bad news for Congressman Holding and Congressman Walker.

Holding and Walker had already earned slots on the DCCC’s 2020 Retirement Watch List and the newly drawn districts won’t make things easier for them. Both face steep re-election odds under the new map and have admitted they have a tough road ahead.

All of this is to say: Retirement Watch on Holding and Walker is ramping up to high gear.

“For years, these Congressmen have relied on obviously gerrymandered districts for their political survival,” said DCCC Spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer. “But this new map, along with Holding’s anemic fundraising and Walker’s secret identity, means all that’s left for them is to decide if they want to retire on their own or let North Carolina voters make that choice for them next November.”

The North Carolina filing period runs until December 20, so they still have a few weeks to finalize their retirement announcements. But the DCCC has a history of success predicting which Republicans have reached the end of their political career. Already, 5 members of the 2020 Retirement Watch List have resigned or retired bringing the total number of Republican retirements in 2020 to 20.

Of the 2018 Retirement Watch List Members, only 6 remain in Congress. The other 10 either retired themselves or let their voters do it for them.
