| NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer is known for reckless spin and dodging the facts, but his desperation in recent weeks is a record even for him – and his fellow Republicans are starting to notice. In the past two weeks, Emmer has downplayed his committee’s special election losses, written off the issue of abortion, tried to reverse his expectations for a GOP majority, and even gaslit members of his own party after facing criticism for focusing too much on his own political ambitions.
Special Elections:
- Emmer described losses in NY-19 and Alaska as a “quirk” and managed to drum up a variety of unfounded, debunked excuses as to why Republicans continue to underperform in races they are expected to do well in, sparking major criticism from some in his party.
Writing off Abortion:
-
Democrats have overperformed in every special election since the MAGA Republican-appointed Supreme Court overturned Roe. Women are registering to vote in record numbers. Independents now favor Democrats. And voters have said that more than any other issue, abortion access and the Dobbs decision makes them more likely or enthusiastic to vote.
-
When asked to respond to GOP candidates running from their abortion positions and scrubbing their websites, Tom Emmer dodged answering and instead compared the codification of abortion access and Roe to “Chinese genocide.” Emmer and the NRCC have repeatedly tried to downplay the issue of abortion because they don’t have a defense for their extreme, dangerous, and unpopular goal of a nationwide abortion ban.
Expectations for November:
Gaslighting the GOP:
-
According to an Axios report on August 24, “Several Republican members and strategists have complained that Emmer is distracted by a goal of becoming GOP whip after the election.”
-
When asked to discuss the “red wave crashing,” Emmer told the Associated Press in a message to colleagues “don’t be measuring the drapes” in a desperate attempt to downplay his previously bullish midterm predictions.
The NRCC and Tom Emmer are watching their premature celebrations, bad candidates, and extremist politics melt their chances of controlling the House. His unbelievably poor management of the House Republicans’ campaign arm is matched only by his friend Rick Scott in the Senate.
DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Tom Emmer and the NRCC are in a tailspin of denial after failing in multiple special elections they were favored to win this summer, being forced to defend the deeply unpopular move of ripping away women’s freedoms, and nominating extremist candidates that just can’t win in swing districts. Republicans will have self-serving coward Tom Emmer to thank when the NRCC and Republicans’ hope for a big Majority is driven into a ditch this November.”
