Tony Gonzales and Raul Reyes Should Condemn Racist Posts by TX-23 GOP Chairs

Reeves, Reagan, and Bexar county chairs are among the dozen Texas GOP leaders who shared racist social media posts after George Floyd’s killing

Of the dozen Texas Republican Party county chairs who have shared racist views and conspiracy theories on social media, three of them – the Bexar, Reagan and Reeves GOP chairs – represent counties within Texas’ 23rd Congressional District.

And Texas Republicans Tony Gonzales and Raul Reyes haven’t said a peep about it.

Bexar County GOP Chair Cynthia Brehm shared a post calling George Floyd’s death a “staged event.” Reagan County GOP Chair Cindy Weatherby shared a list of 21 “puzzling questions” about Floyd’s death. Reeves County GOP Chair LaDonna Olivier posted Monday saying “people are trying to turn George [Floyd] into a saint” but he was a “brutal criminal.”

The Bexar County chair also recently drew attention for falsely claiming coronavirus is a hoax “promulgated by the Democrats” and urging Texans to “take off your masks.”

Gonzales and Reyes were silent then, too. Once again, it’s time for them to speak out while their party spins out of control.

“Tony Gonzales and Raul Reyes failed to say or do anything when the Bexar County Republican chair called coronavirus a ‘hoax’ and their continued silence as she and other Republican leaders in the 23rd District promote racist remarks and conspiracy theories is deafening,” DCCC spokesman Avery Jaffe said. “Their silence only serves to enable the reckless and extreme voices in their party and it speaks volumes about how the TX-23 Republican primary has devolved to a sad, underfunded race to the far right.”
